Santa Maria Maggiore - Roma

Fundada por volta de 431 pelo papa Sisto III. A abside foi refeita no século XIII e a fachada posterior no século XVI. A fachada frontal é obra de Ferdinando Fuga, de 1743, sob encomenda de Bededito XIV. O campanário foi terminado em 1377 e é o mais alto de Roma. O interior tem 86 metros de comprimento, com um forro esculpido em madeira, provável obra de Sangallo, e um baldaquino de bronze sobre o altar principal, também obra de Fuga. Possui diversas capela laterais, dentre elas uma à direita chamada Capela Sistina ou do Sacramento, de Domenico Fontana (1586), com um tabernáculo de bronze sustentado por 4 anjos, e outra à esquerda dita Paulina ou Borghesana, mandada construir por Paulo V com projeto de Flaminio Ponzio (1611). Também à direita da entrada está o batistério, com um altar em baixo-relevo de Bernini.

Founded around 431 AC, by the Pope Sixtus III. The abside was rebuilt in the XIIIth century and the back façade in the XVIth century. The front facade was designed by Ferdinando Fuga, in 1743, after order of Benedictus XIV. The campanile was finished in 1377 and it is the most high of Rome. The interior is 86 metres long, with a wooden carved roof, probably by Sangallo, and the high altar is under a bronze baldachino, a work by Fuga. It has many lateral chapels, amongst them there is, at the right hand side, the so-called Sistine or Sacrament Chapel, by Domenico Fontana (1586), with a bronze tabernacle sustained by 4 angels, and another one at the left hand side, called Paulina or Borghesana, built by Pope Paul V with design by Flaminio Ponzio (1611). Still at the right side there is the baptistery, with a carved marble altar by Bernini.
